BBC article on Hawne Basin

Caroline Whorton

It is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of our Treasurer, Caroline Whorton.
Those of you that knew Caroline know that she had been suffering with her health.
She was admitted to hospital over the weekend.
Both Caroline and her late husband Graham were invaluable supporters of Coombeswood Canal Trust, sadly both being taken before their time.
Thinking of friends and family at this very sad time.

Richard Woodward, Chairman

After consultation the Social Committee have decided to cancel this year's Christmas Party which was due to take place on Saturday 11th December.
This decision has been made out of respect for Caroline Whorton and her family and many friends.
We do apologise to those members who have already put their names on the party list but under the sad circumstances we feel it is the right thing to do.
However this is not strictly a cancellation - more a postponement to January 2022 - watch this space!!!
Just in case you were wondering - the Christmas lunches on Sunday 5th December have NOT - repeat NOT been cancelled.

Cheers, Chris Turner - Social Club Secretary.

  Christmas Get Togethers

(a) Christmas Lunches - Sunday 5th December 2021

Time from 12.30pm to 1.30pm in the Cabin. As numbers are restricted to 30 because of the continuing presence of Covid 19 and as bookings are being taken up quickly, if you haven't booked and you would like to book please fill in the sheet by the kitchen door in the Cabin BEFORE Saturday 13th November 2021 with your choice of Turkey or Gammon and choice of dessert. There is a fixed price of £7.50

(b) Christmas Party - Saturday 11th December 2021

In the Cabin from 7.30pm onwards. £5.per head. Again, attendance will be limited to 30 because of Covid. However, that does not mean that we can't enjoy ourselves. You will be fed by our great and good Kitchen Ladies but instead of the usual buffet, individual plates will be brought to your table (if not Silver at least Bronze Service folks!!!) so if you have any dietary requests please let us know about them when you fill in the appropriate attendance form by the kitchen door in the Cabin by the END OF NOVEMBER 2021. Also - instead of flapping the fishes, chinning the oranges and putting potatoes where the sun don't shine as in previous non-Covid years we shall by entertaining your goodselves with various table games so as not to give that little Covid bugger any chance to get amongst you all!!!!

The wearing of masks will be entirely voluntary and your choice.

So, everyone, please, please, PLEASE fill in the forms before the said dates or, if you cannot make it to the Basin, let me (07810538895) or Dee Brown (07564112009) know cos we'd HATE you to miss these two SUPERLATIVE events!!! It will be so good to get together again so - SEE YOU ALL AT THE ABOVE!!

Cheers, Chris Turner (Hawne Basin Social Club Limited Secretary)

From Sunday, 1st August, the Teaspot in the Cabin will be available for use.

However, we must remind you that, despite the lifting of restrictions, Covid-19 is still very much with us. With this in mind we would ask that you adhere to the notices posted:-

RESPONSIBILITY for the safe use of the Teaspot MUST rest with those using it.

HANDS - should be sanitized before using any of the utensils.
TEASPOONS - one person use and discard in container provided.
TEABAGS - please use the tongs provided to remove from the jar
MUGS - Leave on the tray by the kitchen door.

Please clean the area you have used before departing.

Please continue to check in for Trace and Test either by the QR code or the information sheet.

And last but not least ENJOY the little bit of added freedom in joining friends and colleagues for a cuppa.

Atlas and Malus

Coombeswood Canal Trust and the BCNS jointly own and operate a working pair of heritage workboats; Atlas the motor and Malus its butty. These are run with the help of volunteers.

These are the latest crewing requirements with A&M, including DofE Residential dates which are subject to change depending on the number of bookings taken.:-

If you are interested in helping to crew Atlas and Malus or maybe becoming a ' boat sitter ' and explaining about the life on board a working boat and how the boatman's cabin could accommodate a family then how about spending a couple of hours on the dates that request a " sitter ". There is a document available to help with the explanation and layout.

Anyone interested in helping out please let me know. A big thanks to those who have come along on any of the previous dates last year, it was a busy one! Without your help the boats would not be able to operate.
